3 SIGNS YOUR BUICK OR GMC VEHICLE MAY NEED A TRANSMISSION REPAIR

June 10th, 2022 by

Your GMC transmission is one of the most essential parts of your vehicle. Its purpose is to transfer your engine’s power to your wheels in a manageable form to allow your car to move. The transmission is a highly complex piece of engineering, filled with hundreds of fast-moving parts. Although the transmission is very hard-wearing, there will come a time when you need a transmission repair. As your GMC dealer, we can fix any transmission problem for you.

3 SIGNS YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR GMC DEALER FOR A TRANSMISSION REPAIR

COOLANT SYSTEM PROBLEM

Your transmission is very hot. It’s filled with hundreds of fast-moving parts. Many of these parts depend on friction to operate. Your transmission is filled with fluid to protect these parts and reduce the temperature. This fluid provides a friction barrier between the moving parts to protect them against damage. The heat from the transmission will also heat the fluid, so this fluid circulates through its cooling system.

The transmission cooling system is near the radiator and surrounded by coolant tubes that cool your engine. This cooling system can suffer damage, and this will cause the transmission fluid to heat up and burn. Cooler lines can get damaged or twisted, reducing the flowing coolant, or the cooler can get blocked with dirt or debris. Our technicians will check the system and repair or replace any damaged parts.

ROUGH GEAR CHANGES

The gears in your transmission should shift smoothly and easily without any sound. If you experience rough gear changes, this is a sign of a transmission problem. One of the most common causes is old transmission fluid. New transmission fluid is red and turns a darker red as it gets older. As the transmission fluid flows, it absorbs rust particles, metal filings, and other debris.

This debris will accumulate in the fluid and make it more sluggish. The slower and less viscous the fluid becomes, the less able it is to do its job efficiently. The debris in the fluid reduces its hydraulic properties, which makes gear shifting more difficult. Our technicians will check the fluid, and depending on its condition, we may need to flush the transmission before we replace the fluid.

THE TRANSMISSION WON’T SHIFT GEARS

If your transmission refuses to shift gears, your car won’t move. Although this is a serious problem, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your transmission is seriously damaged. There are many different reasons for a jammed transmission, and most of them can be easily fixed by repairing or replacing the damaged parts.

Some of the causes for a transmission that won’t shift gears are a clogged transmission filter, old transmission fluid, or a faulty clutch linkage. It can also be caused by a failure in the transmission computer, which controls gear shifting. Our technicians will examine your transmission and fix it.
