4 OF THE BEST FISHING SPOTS A SHORT DRIVE FROM CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ

1. ALLAMUCHY MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

If you’re after warm water species, one of the best spots in Morris County to wet your hook all year round is in Allamuchy Mountain State Park at Waterloo Road in Stanhope. Jefferson Lake, Cranberry Lake, and Allamuchy Pond have plenty of access points where you can reel in largemouth bass, pickerel, perch, and sunfish. Cranberry Lake has a boat ramp if you want to fish from a boat.

2. MUSCONETCONG RIVER

The Musconetcong River offers the best trout fishing in the region. The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife stocks the river with rainbow, brook, and brown trout every spring. Allamuchy Mountain State Park and Stephens State Park are popular fly fishing destinations that provide easy river access.

3. TILCON LAKE

Another excellent fishing hole in Stanhope is the 88-acre Tilcon Lake at 1 Kinney Road. The lake is teeming with largemouth bass, pickerel, catfish, yellow perch, and sunfish. It’s also the only lake in the county that holds salmon, stocked annually in mid-October by the hatchery staff from the Hackettstown State Fish Hatchery.

Salmon caught in Tilcon Lake must be at least 12 inches long, and only two per day are permitted, except during the spring three-week pre-season closure when all salmon hooked must be released immediately.

4. LAKE HOPETCONG AND LAKE MUSCONETCONG

Hopatcong State Park at 260 Lakeside Boulevard in Landing is a haven for fishermen with two top-class fishing lakes, the 2493-acre Lake Hopatcong and the much smaller 315-acre Lake Musconetcong. Don’t be fooled by the size; both lakes are excellent spots to reel in largemouth, smallmouth, and hybrid striped bass, pickerel, yellow perch, channel catfish, sunfish, crappie, musky, carp, sunfish, and walleye.

The lakes have car top launces and boat ramps that are open daily. The many private marinas around Lake Hopatcong offer boat rentals.
