VISUAL CHECK

The air filter fits in special housing in your engine, and its purpose is to filter out dust, pollen, grit, and other contaminants from the air. Your car’s engine requires huge amounts of clean air to operate effectively, and without the filter, the combustion chamber would be swamped with debris. Filters have a very limited life, as the more contaminants they collect, the faster the filter wears out.

Your car’s manual will show the location of the air filter box, and if you open the box you can see the filter’s current state. A new filter is white or cream, but as it clogs up with debris it changes color to brown or black. If the filter looks worn or damaged, contact our service department and we can easily replace it.

FUEL SMELL

Efficient combustion requires clean air, fuel, and the spark from the spark plugs to ignite it. When your engine is working correctly, this process works seamlessly. The problem happens when the air filter becomes jammed up with dirt and debris and it prevents clean air from entering the combustion chamber. Air will always reach the chamber, but it won’t be in sufficient quantity for your engine to operate correctly.

When you press on the gas pedal, fuel passes into the combustion chamber where it mixes with the air. When there isn’t enough air, the combustion chamber becomes fuel-rich and ignition becomes more difficult. You’ll also start to smell fuel as the extra vapor that builds up in the chamber starts to waft out. When you smell a strong fuel smell, it’s time to visit your dealer.

BLACK SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST

Black smoke from the exhaust looks awful, and not only that it increases pollution as it’s comprised of burnt and unburnt fuel. This smoke is directly caused by a worn-out air filter. The fuel-rich environment in the combustion chamber allows only some of the fuel to be ignited. The excess, unburnt fuel is forced out of your engine through the exhaust.

When the unburnt fuel leaves the exhaust, it’s black rather than the almost invisible exhaust fumes your car should produce. If you’re leaving a trail of black smoke, call us right away and our technicians will help you.
